Urid Dal (Urd beans) is very popular because of its strong, rich taste. It belongs to the legumes that are particularly rich in protein and is recommended for the aurvedic-vegetarian and vegan diet.
Urid dal traditionally forms the basis of numerous Indian dishes and side dishes. They are popular (depending on the degree of processing) in South Indian dishes such as idli, dosa, vada, papadams.
But because of their slightly nutty taste, they are also popular in spicy curries, dal soups (like the famous dal makhani) or even salads.
The cooking time of the halved but unpeeled Urd beans is about 45 - 60 minutes (without soaking).
