Punarnava Churna (botanical name: Boerhaavia diffusa) is also called Poonanarva Choornam in India and has the special property of reducing and thus balancing all three doshas.
Punarnava is an extraordinary plant that owes its name to its ability to regenerate quickly. Even completely dried out plants sprout again with the first rain after a dry period. Ayurveda transfers this power of regeneration to the human being.
Punarnava is traditionally appreciated as a kitchen ingredient in India, but it is rather unusual. However, it tastes fantastic when served with rice. The recipe is very simple:
Punarnava leaves are washed and finely chopped. Heat ghee or coconut oil in a pan. In the hot oil, first roast a few mustard seeds and then add chopped onions. Once the onions are translucent, add turmeric, chopped green chillies and the chopped punarnava leaves. Simmer with lid on for 5 minutes, add a little salt and serve with grated coconut and rice.
