Organic Barberries (Govinda)

The natural, dried barberries are very popular and are also recommended in the ayurvedic nutritional teachings. With their fine, sweetish-sour taste and the beautiful red color, they are not only a great snack, but also a delicious ingredient in cooking and baking.

Barberries have been used and appreciated for centuries in many cultures. In Iran and other countries in the Middle East, barberries have always held a firm place in healthy nutrition. The Indians of North America have used the purple dried fruits in many ways and assiciated the barberry with many positive effects.

With about 25 mg of Vitamin C per 100 g, barberries are a powerful source of Vitamin C. They also contain, among others, bioflavonoids, flavones, anthocyanins, minerals such as potassium, and alkaloids (up to 13%), for example protoberberine. The abundant natural red coloring substances contained in the barberry are said to protect the body cells from free radicals and other harmful influences.

The dried organic barberries are a great addition to the health-conscious kitchen: they are a good energy supplier, but they have little fat and a relatively high proportion of saturating fiber.
Barberries can be used in a variety of ways, for example tasty-fruity in muesli, cereals or fruit salad. As a delicate and sweet-sour seasoning in green or potato salad, they are a visual and tasteful enrichtment. Barberries can also be combined with omelettes or savoury dishes.
