Aniseed is used as a spice and comes from southern China, India, Vietnam, Laos, Philippines, and the Caribbean. In China, star anise has been appreciated for 5,000 years as a spice and medicinal herb. In India and China, the capsules are a popular spice ingredient for chicken and meat dishes.
The sweet and spicy aniseed gives some curry mixes a special touch. In the Western cuisine, anise is used whole or ground, especially in the Christmas season for baking. No Christmas punch comes without the wonderful fiery anise flavor. Star anise fits just as easily to plum butter, apple compote, or pudding.
