What is Yoga?
The term "Yoga" (Sanskrit: yoga, from yuga, "Joch", yui, meaning
binding, pulling together, harnessing, yoking) can be understood
as "uniting" or "integrating", but also, as in the sense of harnessing
or yoking, the collection and concentration of inner forces.
Yoga - in all its various forms and schools - is ideal for treating
problems like stress, sleeplessness, back pain, stiffness of the
body, nervousness, poor concentration and mood swings. The more
regularly and the longer the time-period over which the techniques
are practiced, the more clearly noticable their success. Yoga is
a self-training in which, from the positive experience the exercises
give, one learns to develop health-oriented and life-affirming habits.
Kundalini Yoga was brought by Yogi Bhajan from North India to the
West in 1968. It is a yoga system that, alongside body and meditation
exercises, encompasses healing techniques like Sat Nam Rasayan and
yogic massage, nutrition and lifestyle teachings from Ayurveda,
and the yogic way of life. Because Yogi Bhajan was a born Sikh,
elements from Sikh Dharma flow into his teachings. This Dharma or
way of life has also, for its part, many yogic roots.
